Welcome To Our Online Class!!

Hello Students!! I am so excited to be teaching you through this online experience this semester! Welcome to Radford University for those of you who are new to the school and welcome back to those of you returning. I'll be utilizing this site for discussion and posting requirements and a plick site for uploading slides prepared to give you extra information. Your text is a wonderful book written by Dalton Conley and you can even read it as an e-book should you desire. I also recommend consulting a Henslin text as a supplement if you should want more explanations (any year will do).

As a way to give you extra time this week, you won't have a posting requirement, but you will have to send me your first written response to questions posted in the book by Monday. Hopefully, this will give you time to get your book and work done. If not, just let me know. A copy of the syllabus and expectations for the first two weeks should be in your email tonight. If something is not opening up for you or is confusing, please email me.

A little bit about me is often in order on the first day, so here goes. I'm a doctoral candidate in Sociology at VT with specialty areas of Gender and Environmental Sociology. I am in the dissertation phase of my work and am hoping to defend my proposal in the Spring. My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Rutgers University/ Douglass College. My Master of Arts degree is in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University. I've been teaching in the university setting since 2003. And, right now, I work full- time in Pulaski Cty with the school systems helping children in the classroom- first grade. :) So, I know what many of you are going through in working full- time or even part- time while in school- lots of balancing going on.

    I am Patty Gainer. I am a Sophomore at RU and am majoring in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Marketing. Even though I am not a Dance Major but I take a dance class two days a week for two hours. I probably could major in dance if I didn't have such a bad knee.
    I like journalism a lot as well. I follow environmental issues and care about animal welfare.
    This is my first sociology class and do not know very much about it, but hope to learn what it is about.
    I also have a cat who likes to keep me company while I do homework.

    My name is ELizabeth Smith. I am a mother of two wonderful little boys (Tate-3yrs, Ryan-1yr). I am originally from North Carolina, but moved to Virginia to be closer to my husband's family. I have a BS in biology from ECU, however I plan to obtain a second degree (BSN) from RUs nursing school.

    Hi my name is Nicole Johnston and I'm a freshman. I am an international student from Liverpool, England. I'm on the Women's Soccer Team here at Radford and my major is Physical and Health Education Teaching.
    This is my first sociology class so i don't know much about the subject but i'm looking forward to learning what it's about and making new friends.

    Hey guys! My name is Amy Kinkler. I am a freshman here at Radford and I am a member of the field hockey team. I come all the way from South Jersey. i have two sisters back at home and one of them is my twin. I personally feel like online classes are going to be confusing but being an athlete I had to have atleast one, so hopefully it's not!

    Hi my name is Alexis Weaver-King and im a freshman here at Radford. Im from Philadelphia, PA. I am not to familiar with online classes so im kind of confused, but I am going to try my best to get use to it. My major is Nursing. Perhaps this is my first time taking a sociology class so im not to experienced in this subject, but I am looking forward in learning new things about it.

    Hi my name is Ayana Avery and I am freshman here at radford Univeristy, I am from Cleveland, North Carolina. I am also on the womens basketball team here at Radford. My major as of right now is probably going to be communications, beucase I am a very outgoing person and I can get along with almost anybody.

    Hi my name is Hope Tanner from Mechanicsville, Virginia and I'm a freshman here. I'm majoring in athletic training. I'm not playing any sports here this year but I might next year. In high school I cheered, ran cross country and track, and also played lacrosse.

    Hey, my name is Thomas Walsh. I'm a Junior this year transferring to RU after completing my Freshman and Sophomore years at GMU. I'm from Woodbridge, Virginia and am thinking about majoring in Sports Nutrition or some sort of Personal Training kind of degree. This is also my first online class I've ever taken, so I hope I can figure this out without any problems.

    Hi, My name is Marvin Holcomb(Brandon). I am currently a freshman student athlete here at Radford University. The sport that I play is Basketball. I am a 6'7 forward from Southern California. I am currently a pre-major but I want too major in sports medicine, and then go on too get my degree in physical therapy.

    Hey I'm Mary Casale I am a Political Science Major, I'm from Ashburn, VA and plan to graduate in 2013... I like to run and workout a lot...I plan on going to Law school after I graduate ...This class sounds interesting and the book already seems way more interesting than any other college text books I have ever read.

    My name is Taylor Sizemore and I was born in Goldsboro, NC but raised in Richmond, VA. I am an only child which is nice i think. I love working with animals and children and wanted to be a vet for the longest time but I didn't want to go out of state to NC state for vet school so I decided to come to Radford to study nursing. I really want to work in the neonatal unit. I really am looking forward to this year and learning a lot in your class.

    Hey, my name is Alex Austin. I am a freshman at Radford, and I am from Fairfax, Virginia, which is in Northern Virginia. Most people would consider where I am from is NOVA. I am on the Radford Women's Golf team. I am not sure what I want to major in, maybe Criminal Justice, or Communications? I really do not know right now.

    Hey, my name is Dana Phillips. I am in the nursing major. I am a transfer. Moved to Virginia from NC. I work full-time at Roanoke Memorial Hospital as a nurse aid, and part-time as a teller at stellar one bank. I love the outdoors and love animals!! My type of personality is very compassionate and non confrontational person. Very sociable.
